Often
gender issues discussed are gender inequality and equality. Inequality has been
linked to injustice against women. Teachings in religion are alleged to be the
root of all problems of discrimination and injustice against women. Is it true
that the teachings of Islam are the root of all problems of discrimination and
injustice against women? In order to understand and explain this problem, we
need to refer to the Qur'an as the main and first guideline and guidance.
The
basis for equality between men and women is mentioned in the QS. an-Nahl verse
97 which means:
"Whoever
does good deeds, both male and female in a state of faith, then surely we will
give him a good life and we will reward him with a better reward than what they
have done."
in
QS. al-Ahzab verse 35 which means:
Based
on the above verses, it is clear that men and women are not differentiated in
order to get glory on His side. Both have the same chance of getting
forgiveness and reward. In fact, both of them have the same potential to slip
into sin. So it can be concluded, teachings in religion are not the root of all
problems of discrimination and injustice against women. But it is a cultural
practice or community tradition that sometimes runs away from the true concept
of Islamic teachings.

responsibilities as women and as men which are created and internalized in the
