SOCIOLINGUISTIC COMPETENCE IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Language is a form of social and cultural interaction in society. In this interaction, language is understood from two aspects, namely aspects of form and meaning. If these two aspects can be understood, language can be interpreted as a series of signs that contain the context of meaning and value. Interaction can be intended more specifically, namely interaction in language learning in the learning room and interaction of students outside the learning room as an application of language learning. Students are expected to be able to communicate in a society that has a context of meaning and value in every language spoken. Therefore, the ability of students to speak properly and correctly will be realized if it is supported by the sociolinguistic competence of the language teacher and the students themselves. Sociolinguistics is a scientific discipline that has an object of study on the relationship between language and society. Sociolinguistics also pays attention to the conditions of society that affect the use of language.

The contribution of sociolinguistics in language teaching can be seen from the determination of the language of instruction to be used in the learning process. The ability of language teachers to choose variations is determined by their sociolinguistic competence. These competencies lead to using language that is familiar to students according to the situation. In sociolinguistics it is known as code switching and code mixing. This is done solely to create communicative learning.

Indonesian language teaching must be able to place language as a means of delivering information, carrying out social processes, and interacting in the learning process. In Fishman's formulation (Chaer and Agustina, 2010: 48), sociolinguistics explains the use of language in certain social aspects or aspects by paying attention to "who speaks, what language, to whom, when, and to what end". The Fishman formulation is considered important to be used as a guide in interacting. The formulation invites to consider several things in language, namely who is speaking, what language should be used, and for whom the language is used.

One application of sociolinguistics in accordance with the above formulation is about the use of personal pronouns in language. A language teacher should be able to explain to students about the social rules of using personal pronouns. Without the help of sociolinguistic explanations, students will find it difficult to use personal pronouns according to social rules. The social rules include, to whom, when, and where the pronoun should be used.

In addition, language teaching must also be able to identify language errors or interference caused by widespread slang. A sociolinguistic explanation of the interference of a language is more appropriate to use to base the identification. Given that there are many interferences of foreign terms that replace words to make them look cool and slang.

Negative effect of media coverage of celebrities or infotainment on children

The infotainment project is a sexy project. Infotainment can reap a lot of benefits, because of more people like it, the more ads that come in. However, processed in any way, infotainment does not seem worthy of being called a journalistic creation, because it can be said that infotainment has not touched the public interest and is doubtful of providing benefits.

Infotainment products that are judged to be incompatible with journalistic products that must emphasize objectivity, factuality, and freedom of opinion both in writing and broadcasting news. Infotainment products do not prioritize journalistic rules and only spread disgrace, slander, and do not cover the boat side like journalistic creation. in the form of rumours or gossip, the discussion is all-out. Meanwhile, one of the Indonesian journalistic codes of ethics states that Indonesian journalists should not spread slander, disgrace and false news.

Today's infotainment shows are accused of having more negative effects on society, especially children and teenagers. Various parties who broadcast infotainment should be wise in releasing and sorting the news that is broadcast and considering the extent of the benefits for the audience and not only targeting turnover and ratings.

Selling gossip and disgrace has become like the mainstay of infotainment. The news presented is not far from the breakup of an artist's relationship because there is a third person, the breakup of an artist's household or a famous person because it is suspected that there is a third person, the seizure of the artist's property, the artist who is affected by the case drugs, celebrities who marry rich widows, and other news that has the same essence, namely messing around in privacy and spreading gossip and disgrace.

Infotainment is also accused of being the cause of the rise of hedonistic lifestyles among teenagers. Hedonism is a view of life which assumes that pleasure and material enjoyment are the main goals of life. For adherents of this view, having fun, revelry, and pleasure is the main goal of life, whether it is pleasing to others or not. Because they think that this life is only once, so they feel like they want to enjoy life very much.

Infotainment that broadcasts the glamorous life of celebrities gives impetus to teenagers to do the same. They want to imitate their idol in their lifestyle, their fashion, and everything about their idol. Sometimes because of insufficient economic capacity, these teenagers seek shortcuts to satisfy their pleasure fantasies which he imitates from their idol celebrities. So they fall into negative things such as willing to sell themselves, or become drug dealers.

GENDER CONCEPT AND GENDER ISSUES IN ISLAM

 

Often gender issues discussed are gender inequality and equality. Inequality has been linked to injustice against women. Teachings in religion are alleged to be the root of all problems of discrimination and injustice against women. Is it true that the teachings of Islam are the root of all problems of discrimination and injustice against women? In order to understand and explain this problem, we need to refer to the Qur'an as the main and first guideline and guidance.

The basis for equality between men and women is mentioned in the QS. an-Nahl verse 97 which means:

"Whoever does good deeds, both male and female in a state of faith, then surely we will give him a good life and we will reward him with a better reward than what they have done."

in QS. al-Ahzab verse 35 which means:

Based on the above verses, it is clear that men and women are not differentiated in order to get glory on His side. Both have the same chance of getting forgiveness and reward. In fact, both of them have the same potential to slip into sin. So it can be concluded, teachings in religion are not the root of all problems of discrimination and injustice against women. But it is a cultural practice or community tradition that sometimes runs away from the true concept of Islamic teachings.

As in Indonesian, English also includes formal and informal languages ​​(formal and informal English). These two types of language are used in different contexts. Formal language is the language that is used when we are in a situation that is also formal or with older people, has a higher level of understanding, is characterized by a long and complicated sentence structure, and sometimes uses vocabulary that is rarely used in everyday conversation. Meanwhile, informal English is used to talk with close friends of the same age, characterized by using short sentences, not paying too much attention to grammar, and using a lot of popular language (slang) and abbreviations.

Manusia adalah makhluk sosial yang harus berinterkasi dengan orang lain untuk memenuhi kebutuhan. Oleh karena itu, manusia tidak akan bisa hidup sendiri untuk memenuhi kebutuhanya tanpa berinteraksi dengan orang lain. Dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, manusia mengenal kebudayaan dan menciptakan berbagai wujud ide, karya, produk, aktivitas, hingga artefak untuk memenuhi kebutuhan hidupnya. Bahasa menjadi salah satu unsur penting yang mempengaruhi kehidupan maupun kebudayaan manusia. Bahasa memiliki peran penting dalam kehidupan manusia karena bahasa menjadi alat komunikasi yang utama.

Bahasa Inggris adalah salah satu dari berbagai bahasa yang ada di dunia yang digunakan sebagai alat komunikasi. Sebagai alat komunikasi Bahasa Inggris memiliki drajat formalitas dalam mencerminkan nilai budaya dan nilai sosial dalam masyarakat. 

Seperti pada bahasa Indonesia, di bahasa Inggris juga terdapat bahasa formal dan juga informal (formal and informal English). Dua jenis bahasa ini digunakan di dalam konteks yang berbeda.  Bahasa formal adalah bahasa yang digunakan saat kita dalam situasi yang juga formal atau kepada orang yang lebih tua, lebih tinggi jabatanya, cirinya menggunakan struktur kalimat yang panjang dan rumit, serta terkadang menggunakan kosakata yang jarang digunakan di percakapan sehari-hari. Sedangkan Bahasa Inggris informal digunakan untuk berbicara dengan teman akrab yang seusia, cirinya menggunakan kalimat yang ringkas, tidak terlalu memperhatikan tata Bahasa (grammar), serta banyak menggunakan bahasa populer (slang) dan singkatan.

Berikut beberapa contoh kalimat untuk lebih memahami perbedaan keduanya:

MEMBACA SKIMMING

Membaca Skimming

Skimming adalah teknik dalam membaca dengan kecepatan tinggi, yang berguna untuk mencari hal yang penting atau menjadi ide pokok pada suatu bacaan.

Adapun langkah dalam membaca skimming adalah :

  1. Pertama-tama buat pertanyaan tentang apa yang akan dicari tahu dari sebuah buku.
  2. Yang kedua menelusuri daftar isi atau kata pengantar, apakah informasi yang dibutuhkan ada atau tidak di sana.
  3. Dengan penuh perhatian menelusuri dengan kecepatan yang tinggi dalam paragraf atau sub-bab bacaan tersebut.
  4. Berhentilah bila anda sudah menemukan apa yang dicari di dalam bacaan tersebut,.
  5. Langkah yang terakhir yaitu bacalah dengan kecepatan yang normal, serta pahami kembali apa yang sudah ditemukan di sana.

Adapun manfaat skimming adalah :

  1. Mampu mencari informasi yang khusus yang diperlukan dalam sebuah teks bacaan atau buku dengan cara yang tepat dan efisien.
  2. Mampu menjelajahi lebih banyak halaman dalam waktu yang singkat.
  3. Tidak terlalu membuang waktu untuk mencari sesuatu yang diinginkan dari buku, terutama tindakan yang tidak menunjang pada pencarian informasi itu sendiri.

Ex.:

  1. Membaca review sebuah buku atau novel untuk menilai sebelum membelinya.
  2. Sebelum ujian, seringkali membaca pelajaran hanya garis besarnya saja untuk mengulang-ulang dan me-refresh pikiran.
  3. Memeriksa sebuah artikel di Koran apakah terdapat informasi yang dibutuhkan atau tidak.

Object (Bahasa Inggria)

Object merupakan bagian dari kalimat. Dalam kalmat terdapat dua macam object, yaitu :

1. Direct object

  • Biasanya digunakan untuk menjawab pertanyaan what dan whom (apa dan siapa) setelah action verb dalam kalimat transitif.
  • Umumnya terletak setelah verb. Tetapi ada kalanya berada di belakang indirect object

            Ex. : The boy play football in the yard

            Ex. : He gives me a flower

2. Indirect object

  • Biasanya digunakan untuk  menerangkan untuk apa atau untuk siapa (to whom, for whom, for what) sesuatu yang dilakukan oleh avtion verb dalam kalimat transitif.
  • Dapat diletakkan sebelum direct object atau setelah direct object dengan menambahkan to atau for.

            Ex. : My teacher gives me good score

            Ex. : I buy some fruits for my mother

 

Pengertian Refer to dan Contohnya

Refer to adalah salah satu bentuk phrasal verb (frase kata kerja) yang dalam bahasa Indonesia bisa diartikan 'merujuk kepada'.

Refer to terbagi menjadi :

1. Refer to somebody / living things (refer to untuk orang atau benda hidup)

    Ex. : My sister has just been sleeping at her bedroom, she is looked so tired

    Ex. : I find the bird in my roof top, it can not fly

    Ex. : I have just bought some fruits for my mother, she likes it so much

2. Refer to something (refer to untuk benda atau suatu hal)

    Ex. : I have just bought some fruits for my mother, she likes it so much

    Ex. : I find a pen under your desk, is it yours?

    Ex. : Thank you for helping me to bring my books, it is so heavy


Refer To memiliki beberapa fungsi, yaitu :

1. Digunakan untuk mrujuk kepada sesuatu atau seseorang.

    Ex. : I have just bought some fruits for my mother, she likes it so much

2. Digunakan ketika kita berbicara dengan seseorang dan lawan bicara kita membahas sesuatu tanpa menyebut objek yang jelas maka kita bias menggunakan Refer to dalam artian ‘siapa yang dimaksud?’ atau “apa yang dimaksud?’

    Ex. : dina : “Today, I meet your classmate in market”

.         Vio : “Who is she? Or Who is he?”

3. Digunakan untuk melihat rujukan dalam hal informasi atau referensi (untuk refer to something)

    Ex. : I hear that you have just lost your money, is it true?

Kata yang dirujuk harus mendahului kata yang merujuk, atau disebut antecedent. 

Perbedaan Dependent Clause dan Independent Caluse

Perbedaan Dependent Clause dan Independent Caluse :

Independent caluse :

- Disebut kalimat lengkap karena sudah memiliki subject dan verb yang dapat berdiri sendiri sebagai suatu kalimat

- Mengungkapkan satu gagasan yang utuh

Ex. : He gives me a flower


Dependent caluse :

- Merupakan kalimat yang tidak lengkap sehingga disebut subordinate clause

- Tidak dapat berdiri sendiri sebagai suatu kalimat tanpa dilengkapi klausa atau frasa lain

- Tidak mengungkapkan gagasan secara utuh

- Harus slalu didampingi oleh independent clause agar dapat berfungsi dengan baik

Ex. : He gives me a flower when I fall asleep

Praise and salutation upon to our prophet, Muhammad SAW, the last messenger, the best figure of this universe. The person who was able to save us from Jahiliyah Era to Lightening Era.
In this lovely moment, I would like to say welcome to Mr. Tri, the General Manager of Dandelion English Course and distinguished teachers, staffs, guesses and of course all of my beloved friends.
